Almost the same plot -- because ultimately based on the same Guy de Maupassant story "Boule de suif". BTW -- Japanese directors of the 20s and 30s were quite interested in the early films of John Ford. And Ozu was a particular fan of Ford's work. Wait until you see Mizoguchi’s Oyuki the Virgin.
